Using Microsoft’s Hyper-V for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) deployments can save CIOs millions of dollars in licensing, hardware, and power costs. Some of the benefits of Microsoft’s Hyper-V for VDI are as follow:

For a recent large-scale government proposal, the license savings using Microsoft’s hypervisor solution was more than $2 million. After combining the most efficient hypervisor with converged storage and computing we offered an additional hardware savings of more than $1 million. By combining Hyper-V VDI efficiencies with web scale computing provided a 5 year power and cooling savings of $2 million.

CIOs should carefully examine their choices as they deploy VDI because there can be surprisingly high cost savings with a complete Microsoft-based solution.

Using de-provisioning at a different customer were reduced Visio licenses by 66 percent in one year.

The result is the efficient reuse of existing software assets, maximizing the return on investment on existing systems and tightly controlling new asset purchases.

Another challenge companies face is securing information–from in­tellectual property, to private em­ployee information maintained by Human Resources, to data shared with partners and consortiums. BAE Systems integrates SIBA with Mi­crosoft’s SharePoint and controls access to documents and records with redaction capabilities down to the character level. The detailed tagging of documents and records within SIBA allows users to ac­cess sensitive information within a given document based upon their specific per­missions and the type of device being used to access the information. Best of all, SIBA is transparent for end users with a simple work-flow utilizing Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint. Only one copy of the document is stored within the database, preventing Big Data from getting bigger– enabling lower storage costs. SIBA also integrates seamlessly into legacy infrastructure. SIBA allows businesses to securely share information while empowering the business agility desired through collaboration with SharePoint.
